Sharp 550SH Review
ph81 I took the plunge & bought it last week. Couldn't wait any longer though since my current phone was dying, so had to out of necessity also. It's decent enough - does all I need it to and more, but wouldn't say I'm blown away by it. REALLY found it hard to find out much about it before I got it. No reviews anywhere... more questions here than answers until VERY recently. Wish there were more reviews/comments earlier for informed choice - but oh well, it's done now! :)
1) Text size: You can change it in the Phone Settings under display - though only changes to bold etc. I find Normal okay for me though. STUPID how it changes to MMS if you increase text size in message. Glad you mentioned it, didn't notice that!
2) Screen colour/resolution good. "Wowed" me looking @ pics from old phone on this. Didn't realise how good some of them looked! :D
3) Video recording - better quality on my old GX15, and bro's GX17! Too blocky on this.
4) Video STREAMING has impressed, nice and clear (though I've never used 3G before to compare).
5) Bluetooth's been fine for me - only been transferring pictures and ringtones between old and new phone, and to other people.
6) Annoying plastic covers for headphone and charge ports(?). They're going to snap off eventually!
7) No full version of games come with this phone, only demos - unlike previous models.
8) Keypad better than I thought. Not struggling to text after all.
9) I like the SPLIT photo feature in Photo Editor (can make a wallpaper with 4 photos).
10) Alarms: Great, this has snooze. Used to just set mulitple alarms to be safe :D
I give it... um about 7/10. Time to stop rambling. :D
<unknown> The look of mobile is great.Design is beautiful.
mick just got the sharp 550sh, pretty cool. trying to source a usb cable for it. vodaphone have none and internet searchs are only coming up with ebay sites. is there anywhere in dublin where i can just walk in off the streets and buy it?
steve had the phone now for 2 weeks and it just keeps on freezing on me all the time, especially when i receive a phonecall sometimes the phone just freezes and i cant answer it, is anyone else having the same problem with this phone??
eddie first you can watch .3gp movies 176x144 screen size no matter how long they are which means you CAN watch full lenght movies
second you can use .mp3 files as ringtones only when they're in haandset memory, you can also use short movies for your contact list
third for any furhter questions you can email me :) cheers mates
<unknown> very disappointed that this wonderful phone does'nt have any in-built radio...will come
out sooner?
skater42 @ Toshi,
thanks for that! I don't exactly understand what you mean by incentive though. Vodafone stores sell nothing but Vodafone, why should they receive incentives? Incentives are mostly used to promote one product over another, not really applicable in a Vodafone store.
I go into an independent, multi-network (offers several providers) store and I can see this:
A K750SE without VF-branding costs AU$ 789.
A K750SE Vodafone costs only AU$499.
The K750SE Vodafone has branding and branded Software, as where the other doesn't. It is simlocked and many functions are restricted to Vodafone Live.
The regular K750SE has no locks and no real restrictions.
Call charges for Optus & Vodafone Customers are the same.
- Simlocking is the most effective way returning profits. If customers can only purchase from one network...go figure.
- Vodafone branding is effective Marketing.
- And well, Vodafone and SE of course have their little contract as Vodafone doesn't want to miss out on the success of the K750i. Subsidies and what not...
But as for the 550SH, this is a little different. As you know, the K750i is owned by SONY ERICSSON and merely "adopted" by Vodafone.
Well, the 550SH is produced by SHARP, but in reality is a concept of Vodafone and hence is only available on Vodafone. There is no other firmware, Vodafone's is the original.
And this is where I started my point.
Why complain about "Vodafone branding" when there is no other? We don't complain about Nokia's firmware...do we. Vodafone isn't just the branding, it is the OWNER of the V550SH, merely outsourced by Sharp.
It's a bit like custom pants. You go and get a pair of pants made and you own them, not the store that produced them.
The store will never ask you to return them if you don't wear them properly, or make them dirty, they are still yours.
cheers,
Skater42
<unknown> Is 550SH UMTS conpatible,isnt it?
toshi To Skater42,
Keita should never tell die to anyone. But he just wants to get a great phone, which we, who posts messeges here, share in common.
By the way, there is reason why Vodafone is cheaper in retailer price because they pay some of inventive to retailers stores. Extreme example is Japan. Same phone you buy in Japan and In U.S. is at least $200 different because Japanese mobile telecommunication company pays so much incentives to retailer stores. But at the same time, they chage existing customers higher for calling. See this is how it works.
